HagstromĀ HL-550.
Jazz, blues, country; this beauty can handle them all magnificently. But, as ever with hollowbody’s, we just have this overwhelming urge to plug it into a Boss DS-1 and a Marshall Stack.
1965 Hagstrom Viking V-1 Thinline.
Casually laying there on the kitchen table as if it’s just another piece of cutlery.

1961 Goya Bass.
We weren’t sure which name to post this beauty under as it was manufactured by Hagstrom for Goya, but finally decided to just go with the name written on its incredible sparkly body.

Yep, I make it to be around Hagstrom o’clock or thereabouts, so here’s a long overdue dose of some late-60’s Swedish guitarmaking genius - so amazing that it’s even overshadowing the sweet Amp Porn in the background!

Continuing our run of ‘Guitars to Frighten Children and Animals with’ comes this Hagstrom Impala, looking rather like someone has poured some paint on the floor and then let it set and stuck pickups and video game controls on it!
Yep, an 8-string bass. Yet more proof if you needed it that Hagstrom are just awesome at everything they do. Both Jimi Hendrix AND Noel Redding played Hagstrom Basses, as did Billy Nelson of Funkadelic and Mike Rutherford of Genesis. Noel Redding wasn’t too taken with his though, because of the difficulty tuning it but Jimi Loved his; you can hear it on ‘Burning of the Midnight Lamp’ and ‘1983… (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)’ amongst others.
Believe or not we do actually have an organised queueing system here at Guitar Porn. Its not all slapdash last-minute panic that causes these beauties to appear with barely literate hyperbole stapled underneath. Nope, no siree, not at all; its deliberately planned that way, planned I tell you!
However, sometimes certain guitars come in that beg to jump the queue and upset the delicate balance. This is one of them. GP’s love of Hagstroms is well documented, but just in case you’re not aware of them, here’s the abbreviated reasons; they’re beautiful and they sound amazing. Need proof? Just stick on any Foo Fighters album, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear are both huge fans and Hagstroms are all over most of their songs. And as for proof of their beauty? Just look at this Viking sent in by Asicksenseofnothing and tell us we’re lying…
You know the usual rant I have about Hagstroms? You know, the one that says they should be way more popular than they are? It also applies to Electrelane, who have gotten back together to play some festival shows this year, here’s hoping that they head into the studio at some point!
This excellent shot of a rather excellent Hagstrom HB-4 bass has been sent in by Plaidwill of The Wellocks. Guitar Porn could talk for hours about the unsung awesomeness of Hagstrom guitars, but you read the blog, you’ve heard it all many times before…
