2003 Fender Esquire Custom GT, nicknamed “The Bitchin’ Camaro”.

Dan Amrich of the band Palette Swap Ninja sent us in some beautiful shots a while back and he’s back with this particularly incredible specimen for us to to gaze at.

“Hi all! Been a while since I sent one of my guitars in, and I’ve been enjoying seeing everybody else’s, so here’s another one from my stash, thanks to my pro-photographer wife, KatrinAuchPhotography.

These were Korean-made models that were sold for just the one year, then inexplicably blown out on clearance for $300 each. (Mine is Chrome Blue, and the finish varied a bit from light to dark over models I’ve seen; they also made these in metallic dark red with a white stripe and in silver with a black stripe.) It’s an unusual Fender for a lot of reasons: Mahogany body, carved top, set neck, slim D-shaped neck profile, tummy cut, a lone volume knob…aside from the famous Telecaster shape, the hardtail bridge, and the single pickup configuration, it’s about as far as a 50’s Esquire as you can get! It was designed as a pop-punk monster, and it originally came with black chrome hardware and a black Seymour Duncan Invader SH-8. For personal preference, I dropped in a white SD JB SH-4, polished away the smoke tint from the tuners, and replaced the other parts with silver chrome. The stripe goes all the way around the body, even under the strap button. It’s extremely light and makes a joyful noise! You can still find these floating around eBay from time to time for under $500, so if you spot one, grab it — you won’t regret it.

“The church of shoegaze has embraced some class. Since last post my dad invested in an Ibanez Artcore bass and an Ashdown amp. It’s got a pretty nice feeling neck and good tone, I call it the Ox!

At the bottom right is an Admira Concerto I bought yesterday for a great price!! She’s a beauty and plays some real rich bass notes.. The further down in pitch I pull a note, the more I get the sensation on my tongue that tells you some real good food is on its way, ain’t afraid to say it! And wobbling notes on the treble strings sounds like rain falling in a desert. A most addictive piece of craftsmanship, I love taking it for a spin in the bathroom.

That’s one of the things we love here, time and time again we find that the smaller boutique guitars are just as wonderful as the bigger, established names.

Kepttheskin was kind enough to send us this shot of a few of his newest toys, saying;

“MIJ 02/03 Fender Jazzmaster. Love the painted headstock! Mick Brierley is making me some pickups right now modeled on an original Jazz set with a bit more output on the bridge to replace those Strat-style things made by Fender Japan. I highly recommend this guy, he gives you a choice between grades of alnico magnet, asks a LOT of questions to ensure he knows what would be best, and will not rest until he’s made the perfect pickups for you. Every set is custom!

Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. I love this amp. I hear stories about some unreliable ones out there but this one has yet to fail me. Clear, crisp, and LOUD. Traded a JCM2000 for it, talk about an upgrade!

Lovepedal High Powered Tweed Twin overdrive pedal. This is a strange (and beautiful) beast. Modeled on a vintage tweed, it doesn’t cover your mistakes like a normal OD, but instead keeps your playing perfectly transparent and will take you to Rolling Stones heaven.”

Dipinto Mach IV’s as played by Los Calamares from Birmingham, England - they bill themselves as the world’s most landlocked surf band.

“Great guitars made by Chris DiPinto, a surf guitarist himself, from Philadelphia. He’s just made models for Earl Slick and Mr Bowie himself.

Great single coil twang and an option to go into humbucker mode as the coils are reverse-wound. Pickups are hot but get a great sound.

Chris did the trem conversion for me himself. I have been playing for 30 years and these are genuinely cool - and we get nothing free from DiPinto, I promise.

Here we are leathering the hell out of said DiPinto’s…

We stick them through Fenders on full reverb to get the sound - it probably has more to do with the amp than the guitar at the end of the day, but the hot pickups do cut through.”

We have to shamefully admit that we hadn’t heard of Dipinto’s before but they are seriously sweet - check out their website and send some love their way!

Here’s Joe Coombs with a beautiful set up which he describes as starting first with the Sheraton ”which goes into a TC Electronic Polytune > Visual Sound Doubletrouble > Electro Harmonix Stereo Pulsar > Tone Americana Spring Reverb and from there to a 2004 Fender Bassman 59 Reissue.”

Fans of The Kills will no doubt be aware that Alison Mosshart is fond of rocking out on one of these but this gorgeous looking creature was found on the website of Manchesterguitartech, and he’s highlighted that “Eagle-eyed aficionados will spot that the tremolo arm is not correct”.
